Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) is betrayed when Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus becomes a gladiator and rises through the ranks of the arena, determined to avenge the murders of his family and the emperor.
Nominated for twelve Oscars and winner of five, including Best Picture 2001 and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Crowe). Directed by Ridley Scott and staring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi and Dijon Hounsou.
